Daniel Moreno, La Fleche Wallonne
So often in the shadows of his world number one team-mate Joaquim Rodriguez over the last two years, Katusha’s Daniel Moreno is nevertheless an impressive climber in his own right. A loyal lieutenant to Purito for the Russian team, Moreno has been a constant companion alongside his fellow Spaniard before some of the famous victories he has earned in the last two years. Indeed, as he entered La Fleche Wallonne, Moreno had plans only to support his team-mate’s bid for victory.
However, Moreno opted instead to launch a stunning attack within sight of the finish line and in the process earned the biggest victory of his career. With the elite climbers all still together on the brutal Mur de Huy ascent, it was Colombian ace Carlos Betancur (Ag2r-La Mondiale) who showed his hand first, attacking solo. But Moreno spotted the danger, latching on to Peter Sagan’s wheel before blasting beyond the Cannondale man to catch and pass Betancur and hold off the challenge of Sergio Henao (Team Sky) to win by just three seconds.
