Spartacus still the man
Spartacus still the man
A world road race victory remained elusive for Fabian Cancellara in 2014 after the Swiss superstar was unable to find success in Ponferrada.
But Spartacus should be written off at your peril – as he continues to prove.
Last year, Trek Factory Racing’s hard man cut a frustrated figure at E3-Harelbeke as he found himself a marked man and missed the race-winning break.
At Paris-Roubaix it was Omega Pharma-Quickstep who then outnumbered him in the race-winning break as Niki Terpstra soloed to victory.
In between, however, Cancellara gave another masterclass on the cobbled climbs of the Tour of Flanders.
He will once again be a marked man throughout the spring but do not bet against him sealing a record-breaking fourth Ronde title, or record-equalling fourth at Paris-Roubaix – even with the new challenges of Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Team Sky.
