Tour de France 1904
Maurice Garin’s disqualification from the second Tour de France actually came post-race and he was not the only rider to have been sent packing from a highly controversial Tour.
The defending champion, who had won again, was the highest profile rider to have had his results expunged though after stories of widespread cheating throughout the peloton – and, indeed, by roadside fans.
During the race some nine riders had been disqualified, for reasons including taking a prolonged mid-stage rest, and the illegal use of trains and cars to cadge lifts.
Garin was then one of 12 riders post-race to see his results expunged by the Union Velocipedique Francaise (UVF), alongside the stage winners and top four overall.
Though the exact reasons for Garin’s disqualification were never made clear, and the documentation lost during World War Two, stories suggest he too took a train at one point.
