The winter training camp is a significant milestone in the season of professional and amateur cyclists alike but there’s more to it than clocking valuable miles ahead of a summer of racing and sportives.

A training camp is all about the bike. It’s a chance to focus 100 per cent on cycling for a week. To dedicate that time to riding your bike and living like a pro, fuelled by the warm sunshine of the southern Europe. Sun, smooth roads and long climbs combine to soothe a cycling soul otherwise bruised by the grim UK winter.

Training camps typically take place between January and May, with the Canary Islands popular early in the year owing to their southerly latitude, and Majorca, Andalusia, Girona, Nice and Tuscany popular Mediterranean destinations. Here are seven of the best training camp destinations.
