Organised camp vs. DIY
Organised camp vs. DIY
What you want to get out of a training camp largely depends on your goals and aspirations as a cyclist.
Do you want to get in shape for the racing season or is your priority getting relaxed miles under your belt in the sun?
Countless tour operators offer organised training camps designed to take the stress out of organising your own break so you can concentrate fully on riding your bike.
All you have to do is book a flight and turn up with your bike (though many destinations offer bike hire).
Most will offer accommodation, half-board meals and guided rides as part of the package, while many also offer mechanical back-up, coaching advice and even massage – it’s as close as you’ll come to living like a pro.
The majority of organised camps will offer a variety of riding groups, with the distance and speed of each ride varying accordingly – make sure you check to find a camp which works for your ability and goals.
A training camp is also meant to be fun. Do you want to be tucked up in bed by 9pm every night or able to enjoy a quiet beer in the evening? Shop around to find the right trip for you.
But an organised training camp isn’t for everyone. You can also organise a DIY camp of your own by rounding up a group of friends, choosing a location, and booking flights and accommodation.
That way you can dictate your own schedule, there’s an element of adventure and you can soak in more of the local culture, but may miss out on the structure of an organised trip and if you don’t do your homework you could spend more time looking at the map than riding.
