Keen amateurs can tackle the same Irish terrain as that awaiting world cycling’s elite at this year’s Giro d’Italia, following the launch of the Curadmir Ulster Cycle three-day sportive.
Belfast hosts the Grande Partenza of the 2014 Giro on Friday May 9, with two further stages on the Emerald Isle on the following days.
And to celebrate, once the peloton is back in Italy, Ulster’s rugged landscape will host the 360-mile sportive over the bank holiday of May 24 to May 26.
Designed to be the toughest multi-stage route in Britain, the sportive will tackle some of the wildest and most remote terrain in Ulster and riders can enter as teams or individuals.
The Curadmir will take in a 700m ascent of the Mourne Mountains, Giant’s Causeway, Malin Head, Mamore Cap – which features hairpin gradients of 27 per cent, and the Fermanagh Mountains.
Featuring a rolling base camp and rider villages to be set up across the county, tents with mattresses, catering, hot showers, physio, massage services and a mechanics’ tent will all be provided.
Arlene Foster, Northern Ireland’s enterprise, trade and investment minister, said: “With our spectacular scenery and challenging inclines, Northern Ireland offers the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable cycling experience.
“That is why organisers of the Giro d’Italia chose Northern Ireland to host La Grande Partenza.
“Interest in cycling is huge here and I have no doubt that many more will be inspired to take it up once they have seen the Giro d’Italia up close as the riders pass through Northern Ireland.
“While this event is not for the fainthearted, with 360 miles being covered throughout its three day duration, I know there are many cyclists at home and abroad who will relish the chance to take on the mental and physical challenge it offers.
“It will also give amateurs the chance to experience what it would be like to compete in a professional race.”
Entry for the event is now open, prices starting at £475 for individuals – however, a £100 early bird discount is available until midday on Monday February 17.
Single stage options and bespoke packages are also available for teams, with more information available at Curadmir.com.
