Hardknott Pass, England
Hardknott Pass, England
UK climbs are typically short and steep but Hardknott Pass takes that to the extreme.
Hardknott Pass gains 315m in vertical ascent in just 2.6km for an average gradient of 12 per cent. The ancient Roman road links Eskdale with the Duddon Valley and is surrounded by the peaks of the Lake District National Park.
The climb, which is part of the Fred Whitton Challenge, considered the hardest sportive in the UK, slithers its way up the hillside in a series of switchbacks which touch 30 per cent at their steepest. Take your smallest gears and your best form.
