Giro d’Italia 2014: stage four – rider reaction

Marcel Kittel abandons, Ben Swift anger and peloton reacts to wet day in Bari

Giro d’Italia organisers, RCS Sport, have had better days at the helm of the Corsa Rosa.

After first losing red jersey Marcel Kittel to illness, they could only watch as the peloton agreed to a go-slow as rain made the circuit in Bari treacherous.

Eventually the decision was taken to neutralise the GC on the penultimate crossing of the finish line, and to not award bonus seconds, but red jersey points were still up for grabs at the finish – prompting an angry response from Ben Swift (Team Sky).

And it was Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ.fr) who won the sprint for victory from a front group heavily reduced by a number of crashes on the final lap.
