British Cycling have agreed a five-year deal with Cervélo to supply bikes for the team, which will include collaboration with the Canadian brand on the bikes for the Rio Olympics in 2016 and Tokyo games four years later.
The deal covers both road and track bikes, so expect to see British riders on the likes of the S5 and R5 on the road – having used the former for the Tour de Yorkshire. The deal also means the research and development teams from British Cycling and Cervélo will be working together on the next generation of track bikes, which should be very exciting considering the reputation both sides have for innovation.
Both parties are relishing the partnership, with British Cycling’s technical director Shane Sutton saying: “I’m looking forward to working with Cervélo. They have long standing reputation for supplying world-class bikes to world-class athletes so it’s great to have them as a partner.
“The research and development aspect of our partnership is particularly exciting for me, and it will be interesting to see what we can do in terms of developing the next generation of bikes.”
That sentiment was echoed by Cervélo’s managing director Robert Reijers, who commented: “This partnership allows us to bring new levels of innovation to track cycling. The Great Britain Cycling Team has taken the track world by storm in the last 15 years. It has developed a remarkable programme with world class athletes, staff and facilities.
“Track racing is one of Cervélo’s three core pillars next to triathlon and road. We are proud to be recognised by one of the most successful track teams in the world as their technology partner of choice.
“We are confident the Great Britain Cycling Team’s track specific knowledge and our expertise in aerodynamics and structural engineering will bring new levels of innovation to the sport of track cycling in coming years.
