Fixie Inc 2010

Fixie Inc. caused a bit of a stir when they first launched with a range of distinctive yet stylish steel-framed bikes. For 2010 the German company has revamped every model, as well as taking the opportunity to slide a couple of brand new bikes in there too for good measure.

Bringing Fixie ownership to a more affordable price point

First of the new bikes is the entry-level Backspin, which offers the brand’s quirky design at a more affordable price point. Sporting a steel frame with the company’s own investment cast FI dropouts, retaining the high level of finish Fixie has built a reputation for and built with double cage toe clips, low riser bar and upgrade compatible 120mm rear spacing with a flip flop wheelset, it’s just the bike for those looking to dabble their toe in the hip world of fixed wheel riding.

Next up, the Black Jack has been refined to give it a clearer purpose. The lugged steel frame has revised geometry, SL dropouts and 120mm rear spacing, and built with a comfortable new Seagull handlebar, threaded headset and a height adjustable, polished quill stem, leather saddle and bar tape and a finish combining gloss and matt black paint with mirror polished stainless steel surfaces.

Could belt drive be the next big thing? [No – ed.] I’m not so sure, but Fixie now have the Peacemaker which is built around the Gates Carbon drive belt drive. Benefits are touted as a “hugely extended lifespan with zero maintenance, lower weight and a quieter drivetrain,” and required a neat solution to allow the belt to be inserted into the frame. ‘JigSaw’ is the solution, which allows the belt to be slipped through the driveside seatstay, which slides open to provide a large enough space for the belt to pass. Fixie reckons this approach avoids the stay having to pivot while withstanding bending and torsion forces.

In addition a new rear cog profile has been designed in conjunction with Gates Germany/Nicolai which allows fixed- and free-wheel cogs and maintains an identical belt line in both modes. A new mounting standard for the sprockets has been designed which apparently needs no special tools. The existing stainless steel dropouts have been re-engineered, and the geometry has been completely revised to achieve a “balanced yet lively ride.”

Pure Blood

Fit for cyclo-cross, commuting, just about everything in fact

With the cyclo-cross season looming large on the calendar (well, it is if you have any interest in getting muddy), the Pure Blood has been extensively redesigned for next year. Geometry has been tweaked and a XS added to the sizes available. A modified tubeset is said to increase stiffness for better mud-plugging performance, the seat post is now 27.2mm, and the modular IDS dropouts have been redesigned to increase the frames versatility – it’ll now run postmount disc brakes without adapters.

Betty Leeds

Updated tube profiles and geometry for Betty

RCUK tested the Betty Leeds last year and found the steel tubed mid-level road bike to be entirely agreeable. For 2010 it gets even better (naturally) with new tube profiles to eke out a bit more stiffness while the seat post is now a standard 27.2mm, and the geometry has been modified – how, we’re not sure, it doesn’t say here. It’ll roll with SRAM’s 2010 Force groupset and a mainly black finishing kit.

Chiprace

Fixie’s Reynolds 953 tubed Chiprace gets lighter

Now we’re talking. The Chiprace heralded the company’s first foray into Reynolds 953 and the results were certainly impressive. This flagship frame sees lighter 953 chainstays and a custom painted Easton EC-90SL fork for an even more stylish look. Geometry has also been revised.

Mo’s Mallett

Play bike polo? You’ll need a mallett…

Finally, something for all the budding (and serious) bike polo people out there, Fixie Inc. has added the Mo’s Mallett to its 2010 range. Fixie says “it share’s the same big love for bike polo like you do. We believe that everybody enjoys playing for sure, but only a few of us do so in building a new mallet or replacing a worn mallet head by themselves. Therefore, we decided to produce bike polo mallets modular constructed with standard diameters and head dimensions to keep any replacement a thing of a minute.”
