The Cervelo Test Team is riding the Tour de France on team partner Rotor’s innovative 3D crankset, examples of which have been given special paint finishes for the event.
Cervelo’s General Classification contender and 2008 Tour winner Carlos Sastre has been given cranks finished entirely in yellow, while his team mates get cranks with a black background and yellow detailing. The cranks have been hand-painted by a famous design studio best know for custom MotoGP helmet designs.
The 3D crankset is created through a manufacturing process called Trinity Drilling System, which involves drilling three parallel holes along the length of the crank. One, the middle hole, starts at the bottom bracket axle end and stops short of the pedal axle hole, while the other two start either side of the pedal axle hole and stop short of the bottom bracket axle orifice. The openings for all three are blanked off after machining.
The end result is effectively a hollow crank with two stiffening internal walls and has proven both stiff enough for the sprinter Thor Hushovd and light enough for Sastre, with four stage wins at the 2009 Giro d’Italia to its credit.
