The LAS Galaxy helmet is light, compact, and offers a comfortable fit, but suffers in the highest temperatures from the limited absorbency of its padding.
We began our test in May (see our ‘first look‘ for a breakdown of its technical features) and have worn it in almost exclusively hot conditions since, including the recent heatwave.
The ventilation was effective, and with a weight of 255 grams, according to our scale, didn’t feel weighty when worn either, but in temperatures in the high teens and above, the majority of the ride was conducted with sweat running down our face.
We’d attribute this problem to the design of the padding rather than the design of the shell, whose 25 vents did a decent enough job.
The all-in-one design of the padding, one that incorporates front, side, and crown, as well as a bug net, and which when removed resembles the Bat Signal, proved too thin to offer anything more than the most meagre absorbency.
On cooler days, we were able to enjoy the Galaxy’s features. While somewhat heavier than the claimed weight of 219 grams, it felt far from weighty.
Strap adjustment proved extremely straightforward (simply slide the clip up or down the strap) and the padded chin strap rested comfortably against the skin.
The sizeable dial on the rear of the cradle proved easy to locate and to adjust, and tightened and loosened the cradle in a series of very definite clicks. The clip fastened in similarly positive fashion.
The LAS Galaxy’s silhouette is among the most compact of any we’ve tested, which placed it among the most stylish. The matt black made a significant contribution to its stealthy appearance, and the gloss accents top and rear were an attractive addition.
The supplied drawstring bag offered safe harbour for the lid when carried and stored – a nice bonus.
