More Italianate kit has arrived at RCUK Towers, in our month of content inspired by the Giro d’Italia.
The Galaxy is a new addition to the range of cycling helmets offered by LAS, helmet manufacturer of the Bergamo province of northern Italy.
It’s a lightweight lid, one that tipped our scales at 255 grams, and includes features that riders have come to expect of the modern cycling helmet.
The shell is made of compressed polystyrene, protected from the elements by a plastic outer casing. It’s punctuated with 25 vents, so we’re not expecting to overheat. Will it be too well ventilated for the typically chilly UK? We’ll find out in the weeks ahead.
The combination of gloss black and matt black is a fetching one, we’d say, and the shiny vents at the rear of the helmet contrast smartly with the sleek finish of the dome. A matt white version is also available.
Inside, there’s a bug net in the crown, and the usual dial-adjustment for tightening or loosening the cradle. The dial is large and easy to locate and the clicks are the most positive of any we’ve tried. The cradle can be moved up and down on a ratcheted strap.
The nylon straps seem securely anchored in the polystyrene shell, and the clip is made from a robust-looking plastic.
Padding, made from bamboo, apparently, can be found at the brow and at the sides as part of the removable bug net. At the rear, there’s a single strip of padding to protect the scalp from the adjustment dial.
LAS supply the Galaxy with its own draw-string bag, and motorcycle-style padding for the chin strap, replete with a tag on which to write emergency details, including name, phone number, and blood group.
We’ll be testing the Galaxy in the weeks ahead. Check back soon for a full review.
