The rain has been relentless so far at the 97th edition of the Giro d’Italia, and the weather gods conspired to cause more carnage on stage six of this year’s Corsa Rosa.
It was not enough to stop Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEDGE) winning the stage, one he had targeted before the race, in the maglia rosa, or to prevent Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) moving into a commanding overall position.
But the Australians were two of a handful beneficiaries of a stage which saw a big crash end the GC hopes of several riders in the bunch.
