With overall success secured, the final stage of the 2014Â edition of the Giro d’Italia was merely processional for much of the day.
But, while Nairo Quintana’s first career Grand Tour triumph – one, it is expected, that will be remembered as the first of many – allowed him to celebrate on the podium, there was still one final battle for stage honours to contest.
And after suffering a number of near-misses in the last two years, Slovenia’s Luka Mezgec (Giant-Shimano) was quickest to record a first Grand Tour stage win of his own fledgling career.
