The roads are wet and gravel-strewn at this time of year, but do you have to go for the standard ‘winter tyre’ if you want to head out?

We’ve been using the Schwalbe Durano S, a slick, 23c, dual compound offering, in these conditions, and found it to be firm, grippy and resilient.

While it lacks the suppleness and adhesion of sister models with more sophisticated construction, it offers a fast rolling surface and proved sufficiently robust for winter use.
