Christmas gift guide 2013: money no object ‘dream list’

A superbike? A shop? A WorldTour team? If you had unlimited funds, what could you buy this Christmas?

Does a team seem just a little too extravagant? Well, why not rein in ambition a touch and buy a team bus instead?

Sky’s iconic ‘Deathstar’ is an instantly recognisable part of any WorldTour race day, and there is far more to it than just driving  Froome, Wiggins, Porte and co. to races.

Team Sky’s ‘deathstar’ buses come equipped with £1,000 seats, coffee machines and even two washing machines

One of the team’s drivers, Chris Slark, gave us a guided tour of the bus earlier this year, and we found it to be full of luxuries.

Just one of the many ‘marginal gains’ Sir Dave Brailsford has been keen to uncover as Team Sky go from strength to strength, the bus is at the heart of race day for the British team.

But if you’re planning to invest in one, be warned – it will cost you a pretty penny.

A full tank of fuel alone will set you back £800, and with generators working almost permanently and the traffic at the various départs hardly conducive to economical driving, you’ll only get seven miles to the gallon.

Still, if you are looking for a statement, the response that greeted the arrival of the ‘Deathstar’ in the WorldTour car park in 2010 should reassure you.
