DT Swiss have announced a brand new set of super-light, tubeless-ready carbon clinchers, with a name that just rolls off the tongue: the RC28 Spline Mon Chassarel.
And if the claimed weight of 1,255g is accurate, the new wheels, which have a rider weight limit of 100kg, will be up there with the very lightest carbon clinchers on the market, and one of just a handful of tubeless-ready carbon wheelsets alongside Bontrager’s recently revamped Aeolus range and Easton’s EC90 Aero 55 hoops.
The low weight means these are wheels designed for climbing and Mon Chassarel is a mountain close to Biel, where DT Swiss are based. The 28mm-deep rim is 21mm wide at the brake track. DT say that although it has the same rim shape as the existing 28 Spine Cs, they’ve been developed with a new resin compound which has more heat resistance to deliver better braking performance.
DT Swiss also say that braking performance was paramount when they developed the new wheelset, and they’ve made sure that it comes in well above the specified minimum safety standard. Elsewhere, the front wheel comes with 20 ‘aerolite’ spokes, with the rear using 24, all of which have Pro Lock aluminium nipples, said to allow for a high spoke tension.
The wheels are tubeless-ready, and come with both the tape and valve needed to prep the wheels if you decide to take that route. Similarly you get a set of Swiss Stop Black Prince brake pads which DT recommend as the only pad you use with these to ensure maximum breaking performance.
The DT Swiss RC28 Spline Mon Chassarel wheelset will cost £1,999.99 and will be available from late August.
