Torq add apple crumble energy gel to nutrition range

Plus blackcurrant energy drink and cookies & cream recovery shake

Torq – never shy of innovative flavour combinations – have added an apple crumble gel to their nutrition range for 2014.

The firm’s gel range already includes strawberry yoghurt, black cherry yoghurt, orange and banana, forest fruits, banoffee and, a firm favourite in the RoadCyclingUK office, rhubarb and custard.

Apple crumble, anyone?

Now, after two years in development, apple crumble will be available from Torq dealers and online from January 27, priced at £1.45 each or as a box of 20 for £27.40.

The gel uses a 2:1 Maltodextrin:Fructose blend which Torq say improves carbohydrate delivery by 40 per cent compared to other preparations using only glucose derivatives.

More importantly, it passed the RoadCyclingUK taste test (taste is subjective, of course) when we tried the new flavour at Cycle Vision, the house show of Torq’s UK distributor, Zyro, whose brands also include AlturaPanaracer and CatEye. The texture is light and easy to digest, with a blend of apple and biscuit, though the real test is how it tastes on the bike when you’re on your limit.

A blackcurrant flavour has been added to Torq’s range of energy drinks

The apple crumble gel is one of three new products launched by Torq at Cycle Vision, with a blackcurrant option also added to the energy drink range, which uses the same 2:1 formula as the gels.

Blackcurrant plugs the gap, Torq say, between the four citrus flavours (orange, lemon, lime and lemon, and pink grapefruit), the “practically flavourless” natural organic option and the vanilla pod flavour. We’ve tried it and its a light flavour which is easy on the palate.

The new flavour is available as individual sachets for £1.45, in a box of 20 for £27.40, or in 500g, 1.5kg and 3kg tubs for £13.99, £27.99 and £47.99 respectively.

We tried the new cookies and cream recovery drink – and liked it

Finally, a cookies and cream flavour has been added to Troq’s range of recovery drinks.

“Think biscuits, milk and cream all thrown into a liquidiser and there you have it,” say Torq. Again, we got to try the new flavour at Cycle Vision and it’s a tempting proposition for a post-ride recovery shake.

The powder uses the same formula as Torq’s existing recovery drinks (strawberries and cream, banana and mango, chocolate mint, and mandarin yoghurt), with a 3:1 blend of carbohydrate and whey protein.

Torq’s recovery drink is available in 500g, 1.5kg and 3kg tubs for £19.99, £39.99 and £69.99 respectively.
