A peloton of penny farthings has arrived in the capital having rode from Paris for Saturday’s London Nocturne.

The riders covered 400 miles in five days before crossing Tower Bridge, ready to race for the Brooks Ordinary trophy on the one-mile Smithfield Market circuit.

The London Nocturne culminates in the elite criterium, with a field which includes Tour Down Under winner Cameron Meyer (Garmin-Cervelo) and Team Sky duo Russell Downing and Alex Dowsett.

“It was amazing to see the Penny’s ride across the bridge,” said Nocturne founder James Pope. “We are thrilled that riders from all over the world have made the journey to be a part of the IG Markets London Nocturne.

“The event has gone from strength to strength since its inception and we expect 2011 to be our biggest and best year yet.

“The event has a reputation for being the most exciting and diverse urban cycling experience on the planet so make sure you come down to Smithfield on Saturday. 

“We’re aiming to offer London the ultimate in two-wheeled entertainment as riders from the World Tour take part alongside commuters and recreational cyclists.”

The London Nocturne is in its fifth year but the 2011 event – which also includes a folding bike race, longest skid competition, team competition and elite women’s criterium – will be televised live on Sky Sports for the first time.
