An incident-packed third stage of the Giro d’Italia left Matt Goss standing on the podium after a clinical sprint victory and Mark Cavendish and Taylor Phinney among the riders sprawled on the Tarmac after Roberto Ferrari’s 50mph side-swipe. Here’s how the action unfolded…

A sombre start to the day saw the peloton pay tribute to Wouter Weylandt, who died after crashing on stage three of the 2011 Giro.

Garmin-Barracuda rider Tyler Farrar, Weylandt’s best friend and training partner, joined the Belgian’s team, Radioshack-Nissan-Trek, on the start line to observe a minute’s silence.

A highlights reel of Weylandt’s best performance was shown on a big screen before a picture of the rider released into the sky attached to three balloons.

World champion Cavendish, wearing the red points jersey, speaks to local media ahead of the stage, alongside former team-mate Goss.

The prize the general classification contenders are vying for. The trophy, that is…

The stage ended in a bunch kick as expected but Ferrari’s wild deviation mid-sprint took out Cavendish’s front wheel to leave the Team Sky leader on the deck.

And there was nothing many could do but ride over the Brit, with a host of riders coming down as a result.

Ahead of the carnage Matt Goss claimed his first win of 2012 and Orica-GreenEDGE’s maiden Grand Tour victory.

Phinney finished the stage in the back of an ambulance but recovered enough to receive the maglia rosa for a third day. The American won the opening time trial by nine seconds ahead of Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas.

Phinney’s ankle was heavily strapped but the BMC Racing rider will be fit enough to start stage four on Wednesday.
