Beijing Paralympic stars Simon Richardson and Darren Kenny will take part in the 2009 Dragon Ride Wales on 14 June. Welshman Richardson, who netted not only two gold medals at the Paralympics but shattered the world records in both the kilo and 3,000m events, will tackle the UK’s favourite sportive as a local hero.
Richardson, who lives in nearby Porthcawl, accepted a VIP invitation to ride the 2009 event from organiser Lou Lusardi after meeting him at a recent event. “Remember that cycling on one leg over 180km is a challenge in itself! More to the point the final climb of the day from the Port Talbot side is very, very tough but I’m determined to enjoy it. I’ve cleared it with my coach and I’m ready for the challenge.”
Joining him on the road will be fellow Paralympian Darren Kenny. Kenny, who holds world records in a fistfull of events, recently set the Athlete’s Hour Record on the boards in Denmark. “You’ve no idea how much that hurt,” recalls Kenny “at first you think you’re actually going too slow but it’s about pacing yourself, it really kills you from 40 minutes onwards!” Great Britain’s Paralympic stars are certain to receive a hugely appreciative welcome from the capacity 3000 riders at the 6th Dragon Ride Wales.
