Wiggins was not the only WorldTour road racing star back in action on the boards, with Jack Bobridge riding to the team pursuit gold medal with Australia.
The Belkin Pro Cycling ace, who competed at the Critérium du Dauphiné, having already completed four WorldTour stage races and started Liege-Bastogne-Liege and La Flèche Wallonne, showed he had certainly not lost any of his track form.
Alongside Glenn O’Shea, Bobridge put in some phenomenal turns to power the Australian quartet – remaining comfortable even when they lost a man at the halfway point of the final.
Bobridge’s role has been that of a domestique on the road, rather than a serious contender, but he showed the two disciplines certainly do not have to be separate entities.
Given the performances of Bobridge and Wiggins, perhaps it is time Great Britain reconsidered some of their track stars turned road racers for the track endurance squads?
