Tour Down Under 2014: stage one – five observations

Early thoughts as the UCI WorldTour season gets underway in Adelaide

After three months off, the UCI WorldTour returned this morning as the Tour Down Under kicked off in Adelaide, South Australia.

And after one day of racing we have already been left with plenty to ponder as pro cycling’s elite returned to competition.

Newly-crowned Australian national champion Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) continued his fine start to 2014 with victory on the first day and an 11-second lead going into the second stage.

But after seeing the 33-year-old out-sprint German champion Andre Greipel, could it be the beginning of the end for the Gorilla?
