UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships – five observations

Marianne Vos reaffirms her place in cycling legend, but discount the Belgians at your peril

Is there any way to stop Marianne Vos?

The Dutch legend stormed to yet another comprehensive victory in Hoogerheide, peaking in form just in time to retain her rainbow jersey. Minor surgery earlier in the winter saw her miss two rounds of the World Cup, and on her return Katie Compton twice beat her on her way to convincing victories. However, where Compton suffered a poor start in Hoogerheide, Vos returned to form in emphatic style.

Her near-faultless technique, even when she was already assured of victory, gave her rivals little hope of even cutting her lead. And the look of sheer joy on her face as she crossed the finish line showed she has lost no motivation or passion for winning. With her ultimate aim for the winter now checked off, it will shortly be back to the road for Vos and with little signs of her supreme form slipping, her rivals appear to stand little chance of stopping her indomitable charge for success.
