UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships – five observations

Marianne Vos reaffirms her place in cycling legend, but discount the Belgians at your peril

When we spoke to British and European champion Helen Wyman prior to the race in Hoogerheide, she told us a medal would be the ‘chocolate sprinkles on top of the icing on the cake’ of a fine season.

And after a fine ride, and her first ever world championship podium finish, her season continues to throw out treats for the British rider and her many fans. The result, she claimed, would only be a personal triumph – ‘nobody remembers who finished second or third’ – but there is a certainly a huge amount of national pride involved, too.

Koppenbergcross victory, fifth overall at the World Cup, retention of her European Championship crown, the reclaiming of her national champion’s jersey and now a world championship bronze medal mean this has been quite a season for Wyman.

And with a slender lead to defend in the final two Bpost Bank Trofee races of the season, it could get even better too. The cake has its icing and chocolate sprinkles – now for the cherry on top.
