Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins named on longlist for UCI Road World Championships

Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins have been named on British Cycling’s longlist for the men’s road race at this month’s UCI Road World Championships in Florence, Italy.

Great Britain have qualified eight riders for the race on September 29 and Tour de France champion Froome, who is set to lead the squad, is to be supported by seven riders from Wiggins, Steve Cummings, Alex Dowsett, Josh Edmondson, Andy Fenn, Luke Rowe, Ian Stannard, Geraint Thomas and Jon Tiernan-Locke. British Cycling have said the final selection will be announced “in due course”.

Two riders who won’t play a part in Tuscany, however, are David Millar, who acted as road caption in Cavendish’s 2011 triumph, and Pete Kennaugh, part of the Team Sky squad that helped Froome to Tour de France victory in July. Both are absent from the longlist.

Wiggins and Dowsett, meanwhile, have been confirmed as Great Britain’s two riders for the men’s time trial on September 25, while Emma Pooley will ride the women’s even 24 hours earlier.

Pooley, a former world time trial champion, has also been named in the six-rider squad for the women’s road race on September 28, alongside Lizzie Armitstead, Katie Colclough, Nikki Harris, Sharon Laws and double junior world champion Lucy Garner.

Meanwhile, Adam and Simon Yates, fresh from a Tour de l’Avenir campaign which saw the brothers finish second overall and take two stage wins respectively, have been selected for the men’s under-23 road race.

Performance manager Shane Sutton said: “I think the selection of the elite teams speak for themselves. We’ve got Olympic medalists, Tour de France winners and former world champions all in the mix and I think we could do well across the board there.

“The Yates brothers have put some really impressive rides in on the road this season so I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do, and we should be well represented in the junior events as well.”
