A much-anticipated second stage of the 2014 Tour de France certainly lived up to expectations as an enthralling day played out en route from York to Sheffield.
Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) attacked late in the stage to solo into the overall lead, swapping his Italian national champion’s jersey for the prestigious maillot jaune.
Chris Froome (Team Sky) and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) had both made a show of strength on the short but fierce ascent of Jenkin Road, but the day belonged to ‘The Shark’.
And the Italian was quick to credit the Yorkshire crowds as the roads were once again lined by phenomenal numbers of people.
