Glasgow 2014: five candidates for men’s road race gold

Organisers unveil route for Commonwealth Games

Early indications are that Orica-GreenEDGE’s Simon Gerrans is in supreme form. Having followed his national road race victory with Tour Down Under success last month, Gerrans is likely to pull on an Australian jersey of a different kind in Glasgow and will bid to follow Allan Davis’ success in 2010.

During the Tour Down Under, Gerrans owed much of his victory to his win on the opening stage, where he out-sprinted none other than Andre Greipel and the course in Glasgow is likely to play to his strengths again. If his national team click as well as his domestic team did Down Under – with several of his Orica-GreenEDGE team-mates candidates for the Australia squad – he is more than capable of controlling the race and challenging in a sprint finish should one occur.
