Wales are enjoying a phenomenal rise to prominence in pro cycling at the moment, with Becky James and Elinor Barker among those leading the way on the track, while Jon Mould, Luke Rowe, and Geraint Thomas are all set to make up the men’s road race squad for the Commonwealth Games. Speaking to RCUK last year, Mould has already revealed the team will be riding for Team Sky’s hard man in Glasgow.
‘Gee’ has a bronze medal from the Commonwealth Games to his name already (and two Olympic golds, while we’re counting) – achieved on the track in 2006 – and he will now hope to better that on the road as he looks to forge an identity on the tarmac. His all-round ability makes him a candidate in both stage and one-day races, but success in the Commonwealth Games will highlight his ability to succeed in the latter and could have huge bearings on his future role. With Wales riding the crest of a wave in cycling, a medal for Thomas at the Games is certainly within their grasp.
