Elite UCI track cycling will return to London’s Lee Valley VeloPark in December after the UCI named it as one of three track world cup hosts for the coming season.
The second round of the 2014/15 UCI Track World Cup series will be held at the Olympic velodrome from Friday December 5 to Sunday December 7, with Great Britain’s track stars looking to secure valuable World Championship qualification points.
Part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series, which aims to bring 70 world class sporting events to the UK by 2019, it will be the second time a round of the World Cup has been held in London, after having made its debut in 2012.
Jonny Clay, British Cycling’s cycle sport and membership director, said of the announcement: “We are delighted that the UCI has awarded an event in its World Cup series to the UK once again, recognising our continued commitment to the sport and world-renowned standard of event delivery.
“We look forward to seeing Great Britain’s athletes return to London and a venue that will hold special memories for many of our cyclists after the phenomenal success they achieved at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“For our emerging athletes, we hope that their first World Cup at the Lee Valley VeloPark will prove to be the start of a successful journey towards the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”
Tickets for the event, which go on general sale on Tuesday September 9, are expected to be in high demand – with British Cycling members able to benefit from access to an exclusive pre-sale period from Thursday September 4.
The event is the second of three Track World Cup events scheduled for the winter, with two further rounds in Guadalajara, Mexico, on November 8 and November 9, and Cali, Colombia, from January 17 to January 18, 2015.
