Polka-dot jersey – King of the Mountains
Polka-dot jersey – King of the Mountains
Chris Froome (Team Sky), alongside becoming the first Brit to win the Tour on two occasions, is also the first man since Eddy Merckx, in 1970, to win both the yellow jersey and polka dot jersey at the same Tour.
Froome finished 11 points clear of Nairo Quintana and a further 18 points ahead of Romain Bardet, who wore the jersey into Paris as a result of the other two leading the general and youth classifications, respectively.
Froome moved to the top of the mountains classification after his stage victory on stage ten, and after first Joaquim Rodriguez and then Bardet bagged the jersey on stages 18 and 19 respectively, the Team Sky man’s fifth place on Alpe d’Huez was enough to win it.
The Team Sky man was actually the second African-born rider to wear the jersey at the Tour, too, with Eritrean Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN-Qhubeka) earlier making history as the first of his countrymen to wear any major Grand Tour jersey.
While only a by-product of his success overall, Froome’s victory proved the attentiveness he showed throughout the race.
Given he also finished sixth in the points classification, bagging more points than sprinter Alexander Kristoff in the process, it has been quite a Tour for Froome.
Victory on La Pierre-Saint Martin, followed by his third and fifth places respectively on the final two Alpine stages were where the polka dot jersey were won however.
