Cancellara’s hour record bid
When rumours started to circulate about a possible hour record attempt by Fabian Cancellara, the excitement levels among cycling fans soared. The prospect of Spartacus, already a legend in his own right after a fine career, setting one of cycling’s great records is certainly an exciting prospect. And while Czech giant Ondrej Sosenka currently holds the record, few would bet against the Swiss icon setting a new benchmark – with former holder Chris Boardman among those backing him to do so.

Furthermore, Cancellara’s attempt opens up the possibility of a new era of competition on the boards akin to the battle between Boardman and Graeme Obree for supremacy in the 1990s. If Cancellara sets a new record, who would bet against his long-term rivals against the clock, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Tony Martin, fancying their own chances? Trek Factory Racing boss Luca Guercilena says the attempt will be either after the Spring Classics in April, or perhaps later in the year in July. Either way, it could be a landmark moment in cycling history – watch this space!
