Riding the sportive escalator

Five steps to riding an iconic European event

Wiggle Jurassic Beast Sportive

Now in its 5th year the Jurassic Beast has firmly established itself as one of the best sportives on the calendar. Set along Dorset’s historic coastline “The Beast” boasts stunning vistas of Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove, a beautifully picturesque loop up to the highest point in the Dorset Downs (where you’re gifted with distant views of Somerset for your effort) followed by a spin along the Swanage seafront give this sportive a unique mix of terrain and scenery to keep you captivated from start to finish.

Normally hosted on the second weekend of May the Jurassic Beast “Epic”, as it’s known to its friends and fellow riders, is 101 miles with 2,250 metres of elevation. The climbs are frequent and testing, especially the ascent of Bulbarrow which is a real brute, so are good for teaching you how to stay focussed and dig deep all the way to the top. Dorset has some of the finest roads you’ll find in the UK. The combination of distance, climbing and where this event lies in the calendar make it a perfect choice as you prepare for bigger rides to come.
