Fred Whitton Challenge - May 10
Regarded by many as Britain’s toughest one-day sportive, the ever-popular Fred Whitton Challenge takes in all of the Lake District’s toughest climbs over 112 thigh-burning miles.
Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter and Wrynose all feature, but the Hardknott Pass is the most brutal of all, with a gradient which touches 30 per cent.
The early-season weather can pose it’s own problem, and it is not just the climbing which makes the Fred one of the UK’s toughest sportives, with steep, dicey descents to contend with, too.
Such is the popularity of the Fred Whitton Challenge, the 2015 event sold out very early but anybody who volunteers at this year’s sportive is guaranteed a spot in next year’s event. That gives you plenty of time to get training…
And if 12 months seems too far away, the Fred Whitton Four Seasons Challenge calls on riders to complete the route under their own steam at a time convenient to them.
