The Four Seasons Fred Whitton
The Fred Whitton Challenge is widely considered to be the UK’s toughest one-day sportive. The distance is a challenge in itself at 110 miles but the ride takes place in the Lake District and scales some of the most toughest climbs in the country, including the passes of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter and Hardknott and Wrynose – for an accumulative total of more than 13,000 feet of climbing.
The Fred Whitton comes with a formidable reputation and completing the rider is a significant addition to any rider’s palmares – so much so that this year’s event has already sold out.
But if you still want to test yourself against the one of the most grueling routes in the country, the sportive’s organisers run a Four Seasons Fred Whitton, which can be ridden on any day of the year. Riders can register in advance to receive a loaned timing card and then follow the route (a GPS file is available for download), with their time then uploaded to an online results page.
