Five young riders to watch at the Giro d’Italia and Tour of California

Who to keep an eye on as stars of the future shine

The future is bright for cycling as the WorldTour’s best young riders continue to make their mark.

At both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour of California, which are running concurrently, the young riders have proved they are more than a match for their older and more illustrious opponents.

From maglia rosa Michael Matthews, to stage four winner Nacer Bouhanni – both aged 23 -the youth are leading the way at the Giro d’Italia.

And in California, Garmin-Sharp’s Rohan Dennis, also 23, romped to stage three victory, while British star Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE), 21, was fourth on the stage to continue his superb neo-pro season.

All this is before we even consider what could be to come from 24-year-old Nairo Quintana (Movistar), favourite for the Giro d’Italia.

But what should we expect from the young guns of cycling as the racing continues in Italy and America? Here’s why we should keep a close eye on Matthews, Bouhanni, Quintana, Dennis and Yates.
