UCI WorldTour 2014: Nairo Quintana blasts to number one spot with Giro d’Italia win

Colombian heads rankings as Joaquim Rodriguez's defence falters

With the 2014 season’s first Grand Tour over, the UCI WorldTour ranking have, as would be expected, been given quite the shake-up.

Maglia rosa winner Nairo Quintana (Movistar) now occupies the world number one spot, edging out Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) who will be looking to reclaim top position during this month’s Criterium du Dauphine.

Defending world number one Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) faces an uphill battle to retain his crown however, with his Giro d’Italia injury resulting in him leaving the Corsa Rosa without having added a single point to his name.

Fabio Aru (Astana), Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) and Pierre Rolland (Team Europcar) were among the biggest climbers meanwhile, the latter helping his team close the gap on Lotto-Belisol as they bid to avoid the wooden spoon in their first WorldTour season.

But what does it all mean, and where does it all leave us ahead of the summer, with the Tour de France looming ever closer?
