UCI WorldTour 2014: Nairo Quintana blasts to number one spot with Giro d’Italia win

Colombian heads rankings as Joaquim Rodriguez's defence falters

Best of British: Chris Froome leads the way but look out for Wiggins and Yates

As mentioned, victory for Chris Froome in Romandie boosted the British cause in what has otherwise been a lean period for WorldTour success since the success of spring.

Chris Froome (151), Geraint Thomas (125), Ben Swift (89), Mark Cavendish (56) and Sir Bradley Wiggins (12) are the men whose points contribute to Great Britain’s total of 433 – with Andy Fenn the only other Brit to have scored WorldTour points.

The outlook is not as bleak as it may seem however, with Froome and Wiggins leading the charge for more points at the Criterium du Dauphine and Tour de Suisse respectively.

Victory for both will add at least 200 more points to the tally – 100 each – while a third British Tour de France win could bring another 200.

And it is not just the Team Sky duo who should be watched for. Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE) is in stunning form in his neo-pro year but is yet to score any WorldTour points.

Having been in stunning form, winning the Tour of Turkey and placing fifth at the Tour of California – neither of which are WorldTour events – it can only be a matter of time before the Bury-born twin is allowed to take his form on to the world stage.

A Criterium du Dauphine place could be in the offing, and British fans will certainly hope to see him at a Grand Tour this season.
