Sir Bradley Wiggins’ medal-winning return to the track stole the cycling headlines on day one of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome enjoyed a successful first few events.
Wiggins and his England team pursuit team-mates Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Andy Tennant took silver behind Australia as Britain’s men put a miserable World Championships behind them.
Jason Kenny, Kian Emadi and Philip Hindes (England) did likewise in the men’s sprint, while Scotland also had cause to celebrate thanks to Aileen McGlynn and Louise Haston’s para cycling tandem sprint silver medal.
With four gold medals handed out in all – Australia taking two and New Zealand and England one apiece – it made for a great first day on the boards.
