Training with the pros: Lucy Garner on sprinting

Tips from the top courtesy of double world junior champion

It’s really hard to say what the key to a bunch sprint is because every finish is completely different, but for me the key to a winning a bunch sprint is to be in the right position.

You need to find the position or else you’re going to lose it. I think someone like Mark Cavendish can afford to be a few wheels back because he’s so good but it’s all about working with the team around you.

That’s something I’ve really learned in the step up from junior ranks. Actually, it’s so important what the team does for you.

They do everything for you, except sprint. They will put you in the perfect position and then you just have to hope you can finish it off.

Once you’re in that position all you need to do is concentrate. It sounds easier said than done, but building up to a sprint you’re constantly fighting to get that position.

I think the team really plays a huge part in that, and it really depends on where they put you.
