Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly will be taking part in the Action Medical Research Down 100 cycle challenge in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland on Sunday 6th June.
The new event is part of the popular 100 Series of UK challenge rides run by children’s health charity Action Medical Research and there is a choice of two distances: a gruelling 100-miler and a shorter, but still tough, 100km circular route. Both pass along quiet country lanes through areas of outstanding scenery in a landscape dotted with loughs, castles and mountains in the distance.
Kelly, now a cycling commentator on Eurosport TV, was one of the most successful road cyclists of all time. He won almost 200 races over the course of an 18-year professional cycling career that spanned three decades and was ranked World Number One cyclist for six years running from 1984 to 1989. His impressive list of wins includes Vuelta a Espana and Tour of Switzerland. He won the Giro di Lombardia, Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix twice each, won seven consecutive Paris-Nice titles and took part in the Tour de France 14 times, winning the green jersey four times.
Sean said: “I’m delighted to be taking part in the Down 100 to promote cycling and to support such a worthy cause such as Action Medical Research. Come along for the ride and help establish this great new event and raise much needed funds.”
