Dutch outfit LottoNL-Jumbo have several options for this year’s Tour de France, but have backed Wilco Kelderman to be one of their team leaders.
The 24-year-old Dutchman makes his Tour de France debut after a top-ten finish at the Giro d’Italia last year, and does so on the back of beating Tom Dumoulin to the Dutch national time trial title.
If he repeats his form against the clock on stage one, Kelderman could well be the first man to pull on the white jersey, and he’ll have another chance on the Mur de Huy having finished tenth there at this year’s La Fleche Wallonne.
But the real challenge will be to keep it to Paris – and a strong overall showing is the more obvious target.
In Robert Gesink, Laurens ten Dam and Steven Kruijswijk, though, there are plenty of options for the Dutch team and plenty of climbing strength too.
Kelderman was best young rider at last year’s Dauphine and best young rider at the Volta a Catalunya this year too, but like at the Giro last year, beating Quintana is likely to be too big an ask.
With youth on his side though, Kelderman has the chance to prove he too can be a contender of the future on the WorldTour stage.
