Jessica Varnish
Jess Varnish bounced back from injury in style at the National Championships, earning victory in all four sprint disciplines across the five days. The Birmingham-born 23-year-old teamed up with Dannielle Khan to win team sprint gold, beating Katy Marchant and Vicky Williamson into second, and then excelled in all three individual disciplines too.
She beat Great Britain team-mate Williamson two-nil in the individual sprint final, beat the Norwich rider by almost half a second in the 500m time trial and then won in the keirin to ensure a clean sweep of the four titles available. After her Olympic Games heartbreak, when she and team-mate Victoria Pendleton were disqualified for an illegal changeover – Pendleton having gone the smallest fraction too soon – Varnish appears to be in good shape as the countdown to Rio 2016 begins in earnest.
