All roads lead to Yorkshire: where to be during the Grand Départ weekend

The white rose county prepares for an invasion of cycling fans

The Yorkshire Bicycle Show returns after its successful 2013 debut and has moved to dates to coincide with the Grand Départ weekend. Held within Leeds Town Hall, it will run from Thursday July 3 to Sunday July 6, with doors open to the public from the Friday (4). And with a huge turnout expected as cycling fans take over the city centre, the show has expanded accordingly.

Organiser Nathan Hughes told RCUK: “It’s definitely exciting. There’s a big cycling culture now, and a lot of money coming in. A lot of brands seem to be popping up, so it’s really good to get to get them in one area and showcase what Yorkshire’s got to give to cycling.

Hundreds of visitors passed through the door of Leeds Town Hall in the opening few hours of the Yorkshire Bicycle Show last year, with thousands expected this time out

“It’s going to be a bit of a different format this year, because of the crowds that will be in there. We’ll be expanding into the other rooms. It will be a lot bigger show, and a lot more going on.

“It’s going to be something a bit different, rather than the big commercial products. There should be a lot of interesting talks, it will be more family friendly – kids under 12 are free, and I think it will be a lot more personal.”

Displays, demonstrations of craftsmanship and a packed programme of talks have been organised for the weekend. If you’re after an event slightly beyond cycling’s mainstream, one to celebrate craftsmanship and the UK’s cycling heritage, particularly that of the North, this is the place to be.
