Olympic champion Steven Burke’s top tips for sportive first-timer Jonathan Edwards

Triple jump legend takes advice from track ace ahead of Etape Pennines

Finally, a key part of preparing for, undertaking, and recovering from a big sportive ride is staying well-fuelled.

The adage of eating little and is well-used but, according to Burke, it represents sound advice.

He said: “The key to staying fuelled will always be eating little or often – that’s the standard thing whenever you’re road racing, going out to do a training ride or doing a big sportive like the Etape Pennines.

“Getting the right nutrition is important, as it is for your recovery afterwards where you will need to take on protein shakes. I’m sure Jonathan Edwards will be very knowledgeable in that area though given how great an athlete he was!”

Olympic team pursuit gold medalist Steven Burke will be supporting athletics legend Jonathan Edwards as he prepares for his first ever cycling event. Jonathan will ride alongside more than 2,000 cyclists at the Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennines, an incredibly beautiful and challenging-60 mile closed road cycling sportive on July 20 2014 in County Durham.
