Rapha merino base layer

Merino is my material of choice for a winter base layer and Rapha’s is the best I’ve tried. It’s important to clarify the word ‘best’, of course, and although this garment has many positive aspects, it is the fineness of the ‘fine merino wool’ that helps it to perform so well.

The Rapha merino base layer is the finest of the breed I’ve tried

Why? The fine wool gives it a slim ‘footprint’, making it easier to wear under other garments than more bulky knits. Additionally, its slender profile helps with heat management, and while wool is an excellent insulator, merino of this grade doesn’t leave me too sweaty. The cut of Rapha’s merino wool base layer is another positive: close fitting, and with a drop tail not too dropped, its comfortable on the bike and stylish enough even to wear off it.
