With the curtain set to come down on another year it’s time to reveal the winners of the RoadCyclingUK 2013 Awards.
The RoadCyclingUK editorial team made five nominations across 12 categories then gave you the chance to have your say on the best on the best bikes, gear, sportives, races and riders of the year – now the results are in.
This year had a tough act to follow after Bradley Wiggins’ annus mirabilis and the London 2012 Olympic Games but there was no shortage of cycling success in 2013, with Chris Froome becoming the second Briton to win the Tour de France, countless bike launches and technical innovations, thousands of new riders taking to the road and even more old timers keeping the pedals turning.
But that’s enough pre-amble from this awards show host. Let’s reveal the winners.
Bike of the Year
1. Canyon Ultimate CF SLX
2. LOOK 675
3. Kinesis Racelight TK3
No less than 36 bikes have been reviewed on RoadCyclingUK in 2013 but only one can be crowned Bike of the Year and that prestigious honour goes to the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX.
The German brand’s flagship model was reviewed in August having accompanied RCUK to the Etape du Tour and we called it “super-light, stiff and with impeccable handing – plus it’s superb value”.
And the Ultimate CF SLX blew away the opposition in the RoadCyclingUK 2013 Awards by securing a huge 54 per cent of the vote.
“Best bike ever”, “Canyon are simply proving high quality bikes with an affordable price are still alive” and “Incredible value, rides like a dream and looks fantastic” were just some of the reader responses we received.
It was a close run thing for second place, meanwhile, with the LOOK 675 edging out the Kinesis Racelight TK3.
The 675’s innovative integrated toptube drew favour with RCUK readers – “The geometry is beautiful and incredibly innovative” – while the TK3’s four-seasons personality struck a cord with many, with praise including, “The TK3 is a fantastic four-seasons bike that has performance and value written all over it” and “Does everything as a winter trainer and makes a great spring, summer and autumn racer”.
The TK3 has been replaced by the Racelight 4S (or 4-Seasons) in the Kinesis range for 2014 but, don’t fear, it’s the same frame but with a new name to reflect it’s year-round versatility and fresh colours for the new year. Kinesis dealers are taking pre-orders for March 2014.
