British Road Rider of the Year
1. Chris Froome
2. Mark Cavendish
3. Alex Dowsett
Chris Froome may have missed out on the Sports Personality of the Year award but the Tour de France champion has received the recognition he deserves by being crowned British Road Rider of the Year by RoadCyclingUK readers.
Froome secured a landslide victory with more than 65 per cent of the vote after a stellar season which saw the 28-year-old claim victory in the Tour of Oman, Criterium International, Tour de Romandie and Criterium du Dauphine before becoming the second Briton to win the Tour de France.
Froome won three stages en-route to that Tour de France triumph, while the Kenyan-born Brit also finished second overall at Tirreno-Adriatico and helped Team Sky to a bronze medal World Team Time Trial Championships.
“What a season he’s had! He was first or second in every stage race he competed in,” was just one of the comments we had in support of Froome.
Meanwhile, Mark Cavendish, who extended his total tally of Tour de France stage wins to 25, finished second in the vote after year in which the Manx Missile also claimed his 100th professional victory and secured the Giro d’Italia’s red jersey to become only the fifth rider in history to win the points classifications at all three Grand Tours.
Three-time British time trial champion Alex Dowsett also enjoyed a fine year after marking his Grand Tour debut with a victory at the Giro d’italia by beating Bradley Wiggins into second place on the stage eight time trial.
