International Road Rider of the Year
1. Nairo Quintana
2. Joaquim Rodriguez
3. Vincenzo Nibali
Nairo Quintana was the revelation of the 2013 season and it’s little surprise the Colombian climbing sensation has been voted RoadCyclingUK’s International Road Rider of the Year.
The 23-year-old finished second overall, won both the young rider and King of the Mountains classifications, and claimed a stage victory on his Tour de France debut.
“A guaranteed [future] GC winner with that climbing skill,” said one RoadCyclingUK reader in support of Quintana, while another believes the Movistar rider is “going to be a big force in the next few years” and we’re inclined to agree.
Meanwhile, world number one Joaquim Rodriguez finished second in the public vote. The Katusha rider won the Giro di Lombardia, finished third overall at the Tour de France and claimed World Championship silver in a season in which the Spaniard topped the WorldTour rankings for the second year running.
Vincenzo Nibali’s Giro d’Italia triumph helped the Italian to third spot on the RoadCyclingUK podium. “The other man of the season [after Froome],” wrote one reader after lodging a vote in support of Nibali. “Such a shame the two of them didn’t go toe-to-toe, hopefully they’ll both be on the same kind of form next year.”
